Copper Mountain in Summer: Everything You Can Do (and Why You Should Go)

Most people discover Copper Mountain in ski boots. But the resort runs from late June through Labor Day weekend, and summer here is genuinely underrated — fewer crowds, dramatically lower rates, and a mountain that looks completely different under blue sky and wildflowers than it does under snow.
If you've been thinking about a Colorado summer trip, here's what's actually waiting for you at Copper.
The Basics
Copper Mountain's summer season opens in late June — the resort opened June 20 for 2026 — and runs through early September. The base elevation is 9,700 feet, which means daytime temperatures in the 60s and 70s even in July and August, cool mornings, and almost no humidity. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in July and August (plan hikes for early morning), but they tend to pass quickly. Evenings are cool enough for a jacket.
Summer lodging at Copper runs significantly less than peak ski season. Ikon Pass holders get an additional 20% off summer stays, making it even more affordable if you already have a pass.
What to Do
Mountain Biking
This is Copper's signature summer draw. The resort opens its lift-served trail network for downhill mountain biking starting in mid-June, with routes ranging from wide, beginner-friendly paths to technical advanced descents. You can ride the American Eagle chairlift up and bike down, or earn your runs from the bottom. Day passes and bike haul passes are available at the resort.
The trail network keeps expanding. If you've biked Copper before, it's worth checking what's new — they've added trails in recent seasons and the network now rivals dedicated bike parks in the region. Copper is also a Loam Pass destination, so if you hold that pass, you have lift-served access included.
Hiking
Copper sits right in the middle of some of the best hiking in Summit County. The Colorado Trail — all 486 miles of it, from Denver to Durango — passes directly through Copper Mountain, and you can pick it up from East Village or Center Village.
From the resort or within a 20-minute drive, you have access to everything from gentle family walks to serious alpine climbs. A few worth knowing:
Lily Pad Lake (2 miles, easy) is 5 minutes from Copper and one of the best family hikes in the area — flat, well-maintained, and ends at an alpine lake ringed with wildflowers in July and August.
Mayflower Gulch (3.5 miles, moderate) leads to the ruins of the Boston Mine camp, set in a dramatic high-alpine basin below Fletcher Mountain. One of the most photogenic hikes in Summit County.
Wheeler Lakes (6 miles, moderate to difficult) climbs through forests and meadows to a series of alpine lakes below the Continental Divide. Less trafficked than most trails in the area, which means more solitude.
Wildflower season peaks from mid-July to early August at higher elevations. If you're timing a trip around it, that window is hard to beat.
The Rocky Mountain Coaster
One of the longest alpine coasters in North America — a 5,800-foot track with 430 feet of descent through the trees. It runs year-round and is a hit with families. Drivers must be at least 52 inches tall; kids ride free with a parental ticket.
Golf
Copper Creek Golf Course is an 18-hole, par 69 Pete Dye-designed course with one notable claim: the highest tee box in North America at 9,863 feet. Views of the Ten Mile Range from every hole. The course is open for the summer season starting in late May. Book tee times in advance on summer weekends — it fills up.
Go-Karts and West Lake
The Powder Lot converts to Summit County's only go-kart track in summer, open Thursday through Sunday. West Lake in West Village has bumper boat rentals with squirt guns — low-key but surprisingly fun on a warm afternoon, especially with kids.
Woodward Copper
The 19,400-square-foot Woodward Barn is an indoor action sports facility with trampolines, Olympic-grade flybeds, foam pits, skate zones, and snowflex jumps. It's designed for skill development but open to anyone. The WreckTangle outdoor ninja obstacle course is next door. If you have kids who are into action sports, they'll spend the whole day here.
Scenic Chairlift Rides
If you want the views without the effort, the American Eagle lift runs in summer for scenic rides up the mountain. No agenda, no destination — just a slow ride up with the Ten Mile Range spread out in front of you. Worth doing at least once, especially around sunset.
Free Concerts and Yoga
The Copper Pedal Summer Concert Series brings live music to Center Village throughout June, July, and August — free, family-friendly, bring a chair. Genres range from rock to bluegrass. Free outdoor yoga classes also run weekday mornings in Center Village through the summer, all levels welcome.
Day Trips
Copper is one of the best-positioned bases in Summit County for exploring the broader region. From here you're 15 minutes from Breckenridge, 20 minutes from Frisco and Dillon Reservoir (paddleboarding, kayaking), and within 45 minutes of Vail and Leadville. Whitewater rafting on the Colorado and Arkansas Rivers is an easy day trip. The Copper Triangle cycling event — a 78-mile road ride over three mountain passes — starts and finishes at Copper in early August.
When to Go
June is the opening window — activities are rolling out but it's not fully staffed yet, and some trails are still muddy from snowmelt. Rates are lowest and crowds are thinnest.
July is peak summer. All activities are open, wildflowers are at their best mid-month, concerts and events are in full swing. It's also busiest, especially on weekends.
August is the sweet spot for many people — still full programming, wildflowers wrapping up, shoulder pricing starting to appear late in the month.
Labor Day weekend closes the summer season. After that, Copper enters its brief fall shoulder season before early ski season prep begins.
Where to Stay
Booking a condo or townhome at Copper gives you a real kitchen, a living room, and room to spread out — especially if you're coming with family or a group. You're steps from the trails, the lifts, and the village.
